 INGREDIENT INSIGHTS:Candelilla Wax (Botanically known as Euphorbia Cerefera) is classed as an herbaceous perennial (for all you green fingers out there!) It is a long and straight plant which grows in hot climates and desert type regions. Through rainy seasons they produce pink coloured flowers with a thick sap covering the stalks with wax, so in the extreme heat and droughts it can prevent evaporation and keep moisture locked in. Nature is super smart right? Built in survival! The plant was originally used for making candles would you have it! Known as “little candle” many moons ago it was named after the physician Dr Euphorbus by King Juba of Mauretania (which toady is part of Spain, Algeria and Morocco). The medicinal properties of this powerful plant were harnessed by the King to treat syphilis. But anyhow, this is not a history lesson! It’s something far more important… So why is it used in makeup and cosmetics? Well, simply put, it acts a binder to prevent our organic oils and other lovely ingredients separating so they can all work in synergy, unleashing total nourishment on your lips leaving them 100% kissable! Is Plant Based Wax or Beeswax better? Naturally shield from the environment just like in nature how the plant does itself! Synthetic free and easily absorbed by the skin. Plant based waxes are fabulous alternatives to beeswax as they are a renewable resource. Unlike honey which is made by the bees for their own families, not for us humans to take! It is now getting rarer by the day and in time consumers will notice their candles going up in price! Types of waxes used in the industry: (to name a few!)

Most products out there are just topical and they don’t penetrate to the dermal layer which is SEVEN layers deep! A BRIEF HISTORY OF PLANT EXTRACTION: Over 400,000 species have been documented across the world to date and botanists are still discovering thousands more each year! Consumer demand over the last decade has led to more innovative and new ways rather than just crushing a plant to try and extract properties. Consumer demand has forged a new path. They are used on foods as preservatives and medically as now we have capsules, tablets and even chewables! We won’t bore you with the technical process, so put simply, you BOIL THE LEAF, SHAKE IT LIKE CRAZY and then LET IT COOL AND CRYSTALLIZE where the wax can be separated and infused straight into your lipsticks! Extracting safely or dangerously? There is more than one method of extraction. Safer options include plant based and green solvents to more dangerous (often cheaper) alternatives such as acids like Sulphuric Acid, Hexane and Benzene. The latter being used by many commonly “known brands”, who are not very transparent so be aware! It makes sense for them commercially right?... Bigger and more commercial brands.... They want to mass produce on huge scales cheaply and make tonnes of profits for themselves and shareholders. They have to cover costs for all their big stores and various other operational costs (hope you are following my sarcasm here… #TotallyNotImpressed!) These cheaper, unethical and dangerous methods are sadly all too common in the industry. But anyway…. New technologies of course help achieve better quality however, at Root Minerals we ALWAYS start with only the highest quality raw ingredients which continues right through to the end products. The Extraction Process Continued: Many large companies and beauty brands use state of the art technology and machinery to deliver on a mass scale. Upon much research and curiosity we couldn’t get a definitive answer from these commonly “known brands” about their process. It seems to be a heavily guarded secret! Let’s shed some light on some processes used in the industry: There are many various processes which are extremely dangerous when extracting the powerful properties from this miracle plant! Chemical solvents, heavy metals and acids are used on a commercial level for example like Benzene, Hexane and reports of H2S04 (Sulphuric Acid) being supplied to workers in Mexico by companies has brought much controversy. An outright violation of human rights we say! Something very concerning that deeply saddens us. On the good side, there are safer and more environmentally friendly options such as Steam Distillation and Winterisation. The latter is quite neat for extracting CBD oil from Cannabis! Ethyl Alcohol (AKA Ethanol) allows safe extraction without harming the environment. A 200 Proof Absolute Alcohol is best and less toxic to humans! Put basically, fermentation of sugar, glucose and starch into alcohol. Think wine and bread! A biochemical process, all plant materials which means NO suffering so totally Vegan! Fun Fact: Yeast, Moulds and Mushrooms are neither a plant nor animal! The Fungi kingdom obtains nutrients in a different way!
